Mobile phones have taken the world by storm. Cellular phone sales increased by 17% this year; while sales of Smartphones improved by a whopping 50% over the 2009 figures. In fact almost 50 million Smartphones were sold in Q1 of 2010 alone. The world has truly gone mobile!

The proliferation of Smartphones has had a huge impact on social and tech trends. People no longer use phones just to make or receive calls; instead they carry their entire world in their mobile phones, and even use them as an alternative to computers. All this has been made possible with mobile applications (software designed for mobile phones), which have evolved to the point that they now offer richer and faster user experience, an experience that includes activities such as going online, managing social networks, checking email, playing games, listening to music, location-based services and much, much more.

In fact mobile applications have mushroomed over the last few years to becoming a massive industry. At present Apple iPhone alone has more than 350,000 available Apps. Androids with 100,000 Apps, and BlackBerry phones with comparatively modest 15,000 titles, are ranked second and third respectively. Windows Phone 7 is also gearing up the join the show. In short the mobile application canvas is widening by the minute and the industry is expanding fast. And where there is growth, there is opportunity.
