Some of you might have seen posts in your friend’s Facebook Feed excitingly announcing an application that allows you to see who has been visiting your Facebook page — the message probably looks something like this:
OMG OMG OMG... I can’t believe this actually works! Now you really can see who viewed your profile! [LINK]
Some of you might have been “brave” enough to click on the link. We don’t blame you, an opportunity to see who is visiting your Facebook page is hard to overlook. Well, the natural sequence of events after you click the link (app called Profile Watcher V2.1) looks something like this:
Application's pop-up page
Upon clicking the link you will be catapulted to a webpage, which will
encourage you to grant permission to the application to access your
Facebook information. If you proceed any further then your “goose is
cooked, Buddy!” You have just granted a scammer complete access to your
personal data, Facebook mail, and wall posts. And the worst part is
you won’t even get to see who is visiting your Facebook page. In other
words all your efforts and losses will be for nothing.
According to Sophos, an Internet security firm, almost 60,000
Facebook users have fallen victim to this shady scam in recent days.
It is interesting to note that this scam in not exploiting errors in the
Facebook code, instead it’s relying solely on poor decision making of
Facebook users; who are being used as host to spread the scam virally
across the forum. Facebook currently does not have the functionality that allows you to
find out who is visiting your profile. The company does not even embrace
third party applications that claim the same. In fact Facebook is
downright against such applications, and requests uses to “report” any
links that claim to provide such functionality immediately to the
moderator.
Warning against such application in Facebook FAQ
In short, if you get a message which claims to give you the capability
to monitor who is visiting your Facebook page etc then please don’t
click it, or else…
