The Age of Online Videos

May 26, 2011 06:19

Did you know every minute 48 hours worth of video is uploaded on to YouTube.com? This jaw dropping figure corresponds to an increase of 37 per cent in YouTube video uploads over the last 6 months and a mammoth increase of 100 per cent over the last year figures. What is even more astonishing is that YouTube (alone) gets 3 BILLION site views every day – that’s the equivalent of nearly half the world’s population watching YouTube videos each day.

Online video sites which were once considered a refuge for lone-wolves, juvenile stupidity and monotonous narcissism, have emerged as one of the most powerful mediums of communications, expression and marketing the world has ever seen! In less than 5 years online video sites have driven amazing innovation in thousands of different fields ranging from niche marketing to sharing of amazing ideas and thoughts online. These sites have a global audience of billions and are recognized as a brilliant source of revenue generation by online entertainment providers.

According to BuddeComm, one of the largest telecommunications research site on the web, around 15% of world’s advertising spending will go towards digital media channels in 2011. The research firm claims that despite the economical downturn, online advertising will continue to expand at breakneck speeds throughout 2011-12. The recent expansion of conventional broadcasting networks into the realm of digital media, and the exponential growth in the use of fixed and mobile broadband usage serves to confirm BuddeComm's forecast.

Companies like Hulu, which have 300+ advertisers using its service, and Netflix are increasing gaining popularity across the globe. While companies like Facebook have partnered with Warner Brothers to offer online VOD services. New distribution channels for on-demand videos are opening up and successful digital media partnerships and plans are in works across the globe.

Whether it’s Youtube, Metacafe, Hulu, Netflix, Block Buster Online or VOD the potential of online digital media, to serve as a substitute for main stream marketing channels is huge! Even the Middle East, with its every expanding broadband user base and internet literacy, offers a market ready for online digital media development.
