Limited field testing began on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, as Google prepared to test the service on a larger audience. Google opted to use the time and tested means of sending “invites” to lure people to join the new network - the same technique was used to release Gmail back in 2004.
Just like Facebook, Google+ offers its users friend streams, photo & video sharing, hangouts and group texting along with a myriad of other facilities, all connected with Google's extensive range of products and services, designed to help make online “sharing” a breeze. In the words of Google “The Google+ project makes sharing online more like sharing in real life”.
All in all, the release of Google+ is the fruition of a year-long project headed by Vic Gundotra, Google’s SVP of Social. The project, which has been delayed by innumerable troubles, is Google’s challenge to Facebook, and forms the corner-stone of the search giant’s future “social” strategy.
