Twitter, the San Francisco based micro blogging service celebrated its 5th birthday on July 15th, 2011.
The service which was launched with an experimental tweet: "Inviting coworkers" by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has now mushroomed into a mega conglomerate, catering to more than 200 Million registered users, sending out an average of 140 million tweets per day! That’s right, 140 million tweets per day, which tantamount to a billion Tweets every 8 days.

Over the years, the micro blogging service has gained notoriety for its celebrity fan following – indeed everyone from Lady Gaga to President Barack Obama use Twitter ardently. As a matter of fact celebrity usage has made Twitter a veritable barometer of what's hot and what's not, and has actually propelled the site to new highs.
Every here in the Middle East, Twitter has made its presence felt. By first quarter 2011, there were 5.5 million Twitter users in the Middle East, 40% of which were in UAE.
