Google I/O 2010

Google I/O 2010

Google is holding its annual I/O conference, scheduled May 19-20, 2010, Moscone Center, San Francisco, which like previous years will be attended by thousands of developers from around the world. Every year, Google gathers developers from around the world to share knowledge about the latest Google and web technologies.

I/O stands for ‘Innovation in the Open’ as Wikipedia tells us. The conference serves as a solid platform where the world’s top developers converge to discuss, share and learn about the newest technological trends at Google in particular and about open web technologies in general. The conference features around 100 technical sessions hosted by Google engineers besides some key themes that the conference revolves around. Generally, the themes of the event are Google’s products and technologies, for example the major themes of I/O 2009 were Android, Chrome, Google AJAX APIs, OpenSocial, and Google Wave etc.

To date, Google I/O has been held only twice: May 28-29, 2008 and May 27-28, 2009. But Google had already hosted a couple of similar events before the birth of the I/O Conference, such as Google Developer Day in May 2007, and Geo Developer Day in May 2006.

The I/O Conference is not just all about dry technicalities. The web giant adds appeal and fun to the event by surprise freebies for the attendees and fun events such as after hours evening parties. Last year, Google made a surprise announcement that every attendee of the conference would receive a free Android phone. This year, the approach is slightly different and Google is shipping all paid attendees either a free Verizon Droid or Nexus Ones before the conference. According to a TechCrunch report, the logic behind the move is that “I/O is going to be heavy on Android content, so Google wants to make sure everyone in attendance is set up with a working phone, without having to deal with the logistics of handing them out at the conference. Getting them shipped ahead of time will also give developers a chance to familiarize themselves with Android, if they haven’t used it already.” According to the report, the units will be shipped based on developers’ location and the time they first signed up for the conference.

The I/O 2010 is scheduled to feature:

  • Over 80 technical sessions ranging from introductory talks to deep dives into the nuts and bolts of Google products and technologies. Also returning this year are fireside discussions in which attendees can have informal Q & A sessions with Google engineers.

  • Developer Sandbox featuring “over 100 developers who have built applications based on technologies and products featured at I/O.” These developers will be available to demo their apps and discuss its ins and outs with the attendees.

  • Office Hours in which developers will be able to take one-on-one help from Google’s product experts. For every Google product featured in the breakout sessions, there will be a designated ‘office space’ where developers can have Q & A sessions with members of Google Engineering and Developer Relations teams.

  • After Hour Evening Party on Day 1 where developers will have fun and relax with food, games, music and more. Google will also introduce GadgetFest at this year’s I/O which is “an interactive playground featuring futuristic technologies, robots, 3D visualizations & simulations, and other innovative gadgets.”

  • And above all, over 4000 developers will be joining the event and developers from over 170 companies worldwide will be demoing their apps and talking in-depth about their use of Google technologies in the Developer Sandbox. This will give the attendees a rare opportunity to meet and share knowledge with some of the world’s top developers.
